124,000 is a positive integer that has significance in Islamic theology. According to one Hadith (no. 21257 in Musnad Ibn Hanbal) this is the number of prophets (Arabic nabi as opposed to rasul[1]) who have been in the world over the course of history. The reason for such a high number is that, according to the Qur'an, God has sent a messenger to every nation ([Qur'an 16:36]).

This number should not be confused with 144,000 which has significance in other religious contexts.
