- The last noted Gugz sanctuary was accidentally discovered on 5th September 1855 by Augustus Gregory. Gregory noted this discovery in one of his earlier exploration diaries as a discovery made while exploring the coastline, possibly due to a reef grounding their ship. The discovery was not part of the main expedition so was left undocumented.
