City University of Hong Kong (CityU) (traditional Chinese: 香港城市大學) is one of the eight universities in Hong Kong. The university motto "敬業樂群 / Officium et Civitas" encapsulates an education philosophy that emphasizes both academic professionalism and an individual's responsibility to society.

The university has a community of more than 12,000 undergraduates and 5,000 postgraduates. International students account for around 9% of the student population. The official language of instruction is English.

CityU is positioned along the axis that links professional education with applied research. It is determined to enhance this linkage and the synergies between research and education, and among disciplines and professional areas. Its position is further defined by its success in educating a wide range of students and by its increasing engagement with mainland China, especially the Pearl River Delta.

CityU has rapidly earned the reputation as a leading university in the Asia-Pacific region, and has risen steadily in its ranking among the world's top 200 universities as reported by the Times Higher Education Supplement - complied by the QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd (QS.com). In the 'QS.com Asian Universities Ranking 2009'[1], CityU is ranked 18th in Asia and 6th in the Greater China Area.

[edit] History

CityU has grown rapidly in both size and stature since its establishment in 1984. Today, it has a student population of 19,084 enrolled in over 142 programmes at the associate degree, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Originally founded as City Polytechnic of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong was granted university status on 1 January 1995. Based on its articulated vision, "City University of Hong Kong aspires to be internationally recognized as a leading university in the Asia-Pacific region"[2], and is now widely regarded as one of the world's leading academic institutions.

In November 2008, the name of "Faculty" of Faculty of Business, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Faculty of Science and Engineering has been renamed to "College".

[edit] Reputation, Rankings and Coorperation

The applied research and professional teaching of CityU have been well recognized in the international higher education community. CityU has been listed among the best 200 universities in the world (147th) by The Times Higher Education Supplement(2008). Its social sciences, science, engineering and business programmes are also ranked 61st of the top 100 in the world.[citation needed]. The Shanghai Jiao Tong University's [3] 2008 Academic Ranking of World Universities ranks CityU as one of the Top 3 Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences in Greater China [4].

The academic research of CityU has been widely acclaimed and published frequently in top academic journals. According to Evaluation Bimonthly, published by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan, CityU ranks first in Hong Kong and 45th in the world for its engineering research [5] and has consistently placed among the world's top 100 business schools according to the research rankings compiled by the University of Texas at Dallas.

The College of Business is renowned for its global network of relationships and the international mindset of its faculty. It has attracted top scholars from Canada, China, Germany, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It collaborates with the University of California at Berkeley on both graduate education and research. The business college is also a partner of the Rotman school at the University of Toronto and the University of St. Gallen on the Omnium Global Executive MBA program. The Department of Information Systems has been consistently ranked among the top 5 in the world.

The College of Business in 2008 became the first business school in the Greater China region to achieve the Triple Crown of accreditation. Its accreditation by the Association of MBAs [6] in March 2008, together with those received from AACSB International in January 2005 and EQUIS in February 2007, reinforce the world-class reputation of the College, as well as CityU.

The School of Law at City University was the first in Hong Kong to offer the J.D., a graduate entry professional law degree programme.

CityU graduates often pursue graduate studies at other top universities including Cambridge University, Oxford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, Columbia University, UC Berkeley, University of Toronto, Imperial College, London, London School of Economics, etc.[7]. The improvement in the rankings and recognition reflects the achievements of CityU staff, students and graduates. It also demonstrates that the University is well-respected internationally in the areas of professional education and applied research.

Among the eight local higher education institutions in Hong Kong, CityU was granted the highest amount of competitive research funding in 2008-09. Three research projects led by CityU received funding from the RGC Collaborative Research Fund 2008-09 totalling HK$16.2 million.

City U also ranked third in terms of the percentage of successful applications for funding from the 2008-09 General Research Fund (GRF). According to the Research Grants Council, CityU’s success rate in applying for funding was 40.7%. By subject, CityU was first in terms of the number of grants and level of funding in the categories of “Engineering” and “Humanities, Social Sciences & Business Studies”.

[edit] Quality Education

City University of Hong Kong is committed to providing quality higher education to its students. It strives to produce a new breed of graduates who will excel in their professions and possess a broad knowledge base to cope with the challenges of a changing world.

The educational philosophy of CityU emphasizes whole person development so that students will receive ample opportunities to nurture both the “breadth” (analytical and problem-solving skills, knowledge of the world) and “depth” (subject knowledge and professional skills) of their minds. CityU also expects its graduates to have a high proficiency of English and Chinese languages, as well as a good understanding of different cultures.

In recent years, CityU has experienced rapid growth in the size of its international student population. In the Fall Semester of 2007, over 250 international students attended the university representing over 40 different countries. The University is frequently visited by Consulate Generals from various countries who welcome foreign students. In November 2007, City U held a joint event with the United States Hong Kong/ Macau Consulate to celebrate Thanksgiving.

CityU has a strong team of experienced academic staff with diverse research interests and professional expertise. Supported by top quality teaching and state-of-the-art research facilities, it provides students with an excellent environment for learning and research. The physical environment, infrastructure and teaching facilities have been adapted from time to time to create an ambiance that encourages intellectual curiosity, social interaction, self-expression and mutual support.

CityU is proactive in reaching out to society and the world. It has built up strong links with local and overseas universities and organizations such as the Oxford University [8], University of Toronto, the University of St. Gallen, and the University of California at Berkeley[9] to develop collaboration in teaching and research. It has also developed close links with industry and commerce for consultancy and knowledge transfer.

[edit] Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan for 2003 to 2008 was presented at a critical time for the University and for the community it serves. The University has reached a level of relative maturity. In a number of important areas CityU research teams have earned an international reputation. CityU's focus on applied research is producing direct benefits for the local economy and society.

[edit] Priorities for Education

CityU's core task is to prepare undergraduates for the fast-changing world of work. In undertaking this task, it intends to give special attention to the mix of professional knowledge, technical skills, and creativity necessary for their success.

Maintaining and improving the quality of education is a complex task. CityU believes that reliable measures of performance are the foundation of sound decision making. It intends to increase the range and effectiveness of value-added measures of success in education.

[edit] Building on research excellence

The scholarship of discovery is the foundation of higher education and an important contribution CityU can make to the community. Having established a number of key research areas, it intends to focus available resources on priority areas of applied research, while maintaining the research profile necessary to support community development and to underpin its teaching.

CityU regards the nurturing of young research talent as a major contribution to society since trained researchers provide the foundation for future economic and social development. CityU looks forward to making our full potential contribution to this effort. With its focus on applied research, the University will continue to collaborate with business partners and others to commercialise research results and to mobilise expertise for the community.

[edit] An infrastructure for research and education

The physical ambience of the University has always been a major concern. Scholarship and learning cannot thrive without the appropriate environment. In the next five years CityU expects to dramatically improve campus life through the completion of a major building programme.

CityU has always recognised the importance of information technologies in teaching, research, and administration. It intends to further enrich the environment for student learning by making maximum use of the opportunities created by these technologies and to bring more services to staff and students on-line and in real time.

[edit] Looking forward

As Hong Kong looks forward to a future in a changing region, CityU intends to align itself with that future, as a university at the hub of a spreading regional and international network of professional education and applied research, at the service of a leading city in China with increasingly strong linkages to a knowledge-based global community.
