Liuyang (simplified Chinese: 浏阳; traditional Chinese: 瀏陽; pinyin: Liúyáng) is a county-level city in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province in China. Liuyang is well known for its firework industry. It has an area of 5007.75 square kilometers and a population of 1,380,000 as of 2003.[1]

Liuyang shares an important place in the history of the origination of fireworks. These flowers as the Chinese name implies (literally Fire Flower) are not just appreciated by Chinese but have also been appreciated by people from numerous countries and cultures.

The Liuyang River is the main irrigation system in Liuyang. There is also a very famous song named Liuyanghe , composed in 1950 by Tang Biguang and Xu Shuhua, the theme of which relates to the river and the nearby village of Shaoshan, where Chairman Mao was born, and is a karaoke favorite in the town.

Chrysanthemum stones are another famous item. They are available in many sizes and can range in price of less than a dollar, to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In September 1927 Mao Zedong convened Left-Kuomintang troops here, in the town of Wenjiashi (文家市) hard on the Jiangxi border, for the Com-Intern-planned seizure of the provincial capital 100 km to the west.

Mao led the troops 170 km south into the Jinggangshan Mountains. Half a year later he was joined there by the troops of Zhu De.
