Vo Chi Cong

- In this Vietnamese name, the family name is Võ, but is often simplified to Vo in English-language text. According to Vietnamese custom, this person should properly be referred to by the given name Công.
Võ Chí Công (born August 7, 1912 [1][2][3] in Quang Nam), was a Vietnamese Communist political figure.
Công’s political activities began in 1930 when he joined with Phan Bội Châu and Phan Chu Trinh, two early nationalists who opposed the French regime. He joined the Communist Party of Indochina in 1935. He fought with the resistance against the Vichy French during World War II, and was arrested in 1942. After the war, he faded into obscurity before becoming a founding member (vice chairman) of the National Liberation Front in 1961, an important arm of the Việt Cộng and vice secretary COSVN. He was a key figure in the South Vietnamese communist party and was rewarded after the reunification of Vietnam with a seat on the Politburo in 1976. He served in various cabinets posts after that, including Minister of Fisheries (1976-1977), Minister of Agriculture (1977-1978), and deputy Prime Minister (1976-1982) before serving as President of Vietnam between 1987 and 1992. He is Advisor of Party's Central Committee from 1991 to 1997.
